What is homology?
Homology is the study of similar characteristics formed through shared ancestry. These shared characteristics can come from species' anatomy, cell structure, genes, proteins, and many others. Protein homologs are similar proteins found in other species formed through shared ancestry. This allows researchers to study genes found in humans in many different ways that are not available to be performed in human subjects. (1)

What are some species with ABCA4 Homologs?
Macaca fascicularis (crab-eating macaque) - NP_001306272.1
98.2% Identity |
Rattus norvegicus (rat) - ENSRNOP00000017878
88.2% Identity |
Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit fly) - NP_608445.2
30.98% Identity |
Caenorhabditis elegans - NP_001293361.1
35.29% Identity |
Discussion
For many species the ABCA4 gene is relatively well conserved. This is especially true for species that have similar eye forms, in comparison to Drosophila melanogaster which have compound eyes and Caenorhabditis elegans which have no eyes. This should be heavily taken into account when choosing species in which to study ABCA4.
